Marcel Albert was born in France in 1917 and joined the military in 1938 after developing an interest in aviation. In 1939 and 1940, Marcel was in combat flying France's newest fighter against German forces invading Poland and France. After the French armistice with Germany, Marcel made his way to England and flew 47 missions with the RAF. In 1942, Marcel and 13 other pilots with 50 mechanics left Scotland for Russia to form the Normandie Regiment. In combat flying the Yak-1 fighters, he earned his status as an ace. In one victory, he shot down a German ace who at the time had 216 aerial victories. In all of his time in combat, only two bullets ever hit his plane. He ended the war having flown 262 combat missions with three different air forces and 23 confirmed victories.
