CAF New England Wing Seeks Public’s Help to Name Aircraft
North Hampton, NH (February 24, 2025) - The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) New England Wing is calling on aviation enthusiasts and history buffs to help name their assigned historic Fairchild PT-23 aircraft. This rare World War II primary trainer holds a special place in American aviation history as the very first PT-23 prototype delivered to the U.S. Army Air Forces on August 1, 1942.
During World War II, it was common for military aircraft to feature names and nose art, boosting morale and fostering camaraderie among aircrews. While most well-known examples appeared on combat aircraft, some training airplanes also carried unique names and artwork. These often-reflected humor, patriotism, and cultural influences of the time.
Now, the CAF New England Wing invites the public to contribute to this rich tradition by helping select a fitting name for their PT-23. Suggested names should reflect the aircraft’s historical significance and spirit of the era.
How to Participate Name ideas can be submitted via email to devofficer@necaf.org. The CAF New England Wing will collect submissions and allow its members to vote on the best name.
This is a unique opportunity to leave a lasting mark on aviation history and honor the legacy of those who trained on aircraft like the PT-23 during World War II. Join us in naming this remarkable warbird!
