A-26 Night Mission Restoration in Final Phases

Fort Worth, TX (April 4, 2025) –The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Invader Squadron is working tirelessly to restore their assigned A-26 Night Mission to flying status in time for airshow season after a dedicated restoration effort that began in 2021. Last month, the aircraft entered the final phases of its return-to-flight process, so we should see Night Mission back in the air very soon.

The Unit has made significant progress in recent weeks. The aircraft’s left engine has been successfully installed, the gear swing tests have been completed, and the propellers have returned from inspection and are now reinstalled. The required 100-hour inspection is nearly complete, marking another key milestone in the restoration journey.

“We hope to fly it very soon and showcase Night Mission at numerous airshows this season,” said CAF Colonel and Invader Squadron Social Media Manager Karolina Marek. “The enthusiasm is through the roof at the Invader Squadron.”

The project has been a labor of love, driven entirely by volunteers under the leadership of Squadron Leader Patrick Mahaffey and Maintenance Officer Steve Swift. Both are A&P certified, PIC-rated on the A-26, and among the most experienced A-26 operators in the CAF. Their expertise—and passion for keeping this historic aircraft flying—has been vital to the progress made so far.

In addition to mechanical work, the squadron hosted a ground school session for both new and returning members. The training covered the A-26’s systems, operational procedures, and its storied history—ensuring that crews are fully prepared when the aircraft is ready.

Recent engine runs, several taxi tests, and a successful high-speed taxi test all indicate the aircraft’s readiness. With the cowlings reattached, final preparations are underway for flight clearance.

In addition to the momentum, the Invader Squadron participated in the CAF’s 12 Planes of Christmas fundraiser in 2024, raising over $5,000 to support Night Mission’s restoration.

Stay tuned—this legendary warbird’s return to the skies will be legendary. You can keep up with the Invader Squadron on their Facebook and Instagram.
