Lady Liberty Squadron Hosts STEM Aviation Experience for Oklahoma Aviation Academy Students
Enid, Oklahoma (March 24, 2026) — The Lady Liberty Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) recently hosted a hands-on STEM aviation event for 26 students from the Oklahoma Aviation Academy High School in Norman, Oklahoma, providing an immersive experience designed to inspire the next generation of aviators, engineers, and aerospace professionals.
During the event, students participated in interactive learning sessions covering key aviation and STEM concepts including aviation history, aerodynamics, aircraft engines and propulsion, force and flight principles, and aircraft weight and balance. The program emphasized practical learning and real-world application of science and engineering principles used in aviation.
One of the highlights of the event was a hands-on workshop where students learned how to install aircraft rivets, gaining insight into the craftsmanship that built and maintained historic aircraft. The activity paid tribute to the legacy of “Rosie the Riveter,” whose work during World War II helped produce the aircraft that defended freedom.
The event also featured participation from officers of the 71st Flying Training Group at Vance Air Force Base, who provided students with unique exposure to modern military aviation training.
Two T-1 Jayhawk instructor pilots brought a T-1 aircraft to serve as a backdrop for the event. The instructors provided tours of the aircraft and shared insights into multi-engine flight operations, pilot training, and the pathway to becoming an Air Force pilot.
In addition, two T-6 Texan II instructor pilots gave every student the opportunity to experience flying through the use of a T-6 flight simulator, allowing students to take the controls and gain a firsthand appreciation for the skills required in military pilot training.
“This event was designed to bring aviation and STEM education to life,” said a representative from the Lady Liberty Squadron. “By combining history, hands-on learning, and interaction with active-duty Air Force pilots, students were able to see the real-world impact of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in aviation.”
The Lady Liberty Squadron, part of the Commemorative Air Force, is dedicated to preserving the history of military aviation while using historic aircraft and educational programs to inspire, educate, and honor.
Events like this STEM experience help build connections between historic aviation, modern military aviation, and the future workforce of aerospace professionals.
