Researchers Find Remains of Missing WWII-Era Bombers in the Adriatic Sea

Delaware, USA (January 23, 2032) - A research team consisting of personnel from the University of Delaware and the U.S. military discovered five B-24 Liberators in the Adriatic sea. These five bombers were lost while returning from missions and are linked to at least 23 airmen declared missing in action for nearly 80 years.

The joint team of the U.S. Military and University of Delaware was also assisted by Croatian archaeologists, scientists, divers, and military personnel. The search was sponsored by the DPAA (Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency) which travels the globe to resolve the fate of those declared prisoners of war or missing in action. The search was conducted using a combination of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), magnetometers, and high-resolution video cameras. Once these devices detected promising leads, a team of divers would go down to investigate further and verify the existence of the wreck.

Three of the five bombers that were found were positively identified from service records and were associated with 23 airmen who were previously listed as missing in action. This positive identification has lead to the airmen being re-designated from missing in action to killed in action.
