In cities across the U.S., vintage military aircraft rest quietly in museums, where school children and tourists admire them, take their pictures and leave them behind closed doors at the end of each day.

This October aviation history blasts out of the museums and into the skies as Texas Raiders, a fully restored B-17 Flying Fortress, thunders into New Orleans on her four giant engines. Of the 12,731 B-17s built across the US, only 9 are currently flying—including Texas Raiders, which is presented by the Commemorative Air Force. One of the last flying examples of the famous WWII aircraft joins the CAF AirPower History Tour at Lakefront Airport, offering attendees a seldom seen opportunity to see and touch one of history’s most storied heavy bombers.

The CAF Airpower History Tour is hosted by New Orleans’ National WWII Museum, and features an impressive flying display of vintage military aircraft and offers visitors an excellent opportunity to get close to the aircraft. All of the aircraft will offer tours and flights in the historic planes, hosted by their crews. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 12-14, attendees can visit the aircraft and can take a walk-through tour that includes commentary from crew members, which is included in event admission. Attendees who want the ultimate Flying Fortress experience can make a reservation below on this page for one of the limited numbers of 25-minute flights on the classic aircraft, which features authentic period-specific machine guns, original radio equipment, a Norden bombsight and the four hugely powerful Wright –Cyclone engines.

Joining the B-17 Flying Fortress at Lakefront Airport will be the CAF B-29 Super Fortress, FIFI, the notable B-25 Mitchell bomber, Yellow Rose, the P-51 Gunfighter as well as the only flying example of the SB2C Helldiver and other vintage warbirds. Reservations to fly on these aircraft may be made at http://www.airpowersquadron.org
