CAF New England Wing Receives Hiller UH-12 Assignment

North Hampton, NH (April 30, 2026) – The Commemorative Air Force’s New England Wing is breaking new ground—welcoming a rare rotorcraft into its ranks. The Hiller UH-12A, now registered as N4977E, joins the Wing following its donation in April 2026 and immediate assignment that same month. Preparations are already underway to ready the helicopter for hangar display and select public appearances later this year. Its arrival adds to a small but growing rotorcraft presence within the CAF, joining the H-13 Sioux Bayou Belle, operated by the Bayou State Escadrille.

The Impact of the UH-12/UH-23 Raven

With the addition of the Hiller UH-12A, the CAF continues to expand its collection of vintage aircraft and rotorcraft beyond the World War II era. In recent years, the CAF has broadened its scope to include Vietnam War-era aircraft. In addition to the UH-12, the AC-47 Spooky was added to the CAF Gulf Coast Wing in 2024. Both aircraft are associated with the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The CAF’s mission to Educate, Inspire, and Honor is furthered by showcasing a diverse range of warbirds, each with a story that continues to influence the present day.

The UH-12 was designted by the U.S. military as the UH-23 Raven. This light utility helicopter, developed by Hiller Aircraft, made history as the first helicopter to complete a transcontinental flight across the United States in 1949. The UH-12 is rich in military history, having been used for observation, liaison, and medical evacuation during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The UH-12 didn’t fade away after military service; in fact, it became one of those workhorse helicopters that quietly showed up everywhere. They were widely used in civilian and government roles, including crop-dusting, law enforcement, and search-and-rescue operations.

The Future

The New England Wing is a Unit filled with potential. As it continues to grow, members are excited about what this new aircraft will bring—not only to the organization, but also to the surrounding community. Unit Leader Laurie Seymour shared her enthusiasm: “We are super excited about this helicopter and the opportunity to share it. This Hiller is a beautiful example of a Korean War-era trainer, and we can hardly wait to tell her stories and help inspire young people to commit to aviation.”

Time and dedication are being taken into the thoughtful approach to bringing the aircraft online. Their goal is to ensure that aviation enthusiasts, families, and potential riders get the most out of the UH-12 experience. This aircraft will help solidify their position as aviation leaders in the Granite State. “We do not plan on operating this Hiller immediately. As she is new to us, we want to ensure she is mechanically sound, that we have strong operational procedures, and that we’ve put together a meaningful program,” Seymour explained.

Despite the added workload, the Unit is energized by the challenge and eager to involve the public. They are inviting helicopter enthusiasts and aviation lovers alike to get involved. “We feel honored and blessed to take on this beautiful new-to-us Hiller, and we invite all helicopter enthusiasts to come visit and join us if they would like to participate.”
