Mile High Wing Welcomes T-28A “High Maintenance” to Its Fleet
Broomfield, CO (April 15, 2026) - The Commemorative Air Force’s Mile High Wing has officially welcomed a new aircraft to its lineup. The North American T-28A Trojan, now known as High Maintenance, is proudly flying with the team.
The aircraft, registered as N92TL, arrived at the Unit in March 2026 after the CAF acquired it in late 2025. The Wing quickly began preparing it, already holding its first ground school and working toward offering ride experiences.
The CAF now operates two T-28s. The second is assigned to the High Sky Wing in Midland, Texas, which shares the story of post-World War II military aviation.
A Trainer for the Jet Age
The North American T-28 Trojan was introduced in 1949 to train pilots for the jet age, replacing the T-6 Texan. The U.S. Air Force used the T-28 into the 1960s, and other branches continued flying it into the 1980s. The T-28 trained pilots around the world until it was retired in 1984.
The T-28A, like High Maintenance, used an 800-horsepower radial engine. Later versions had almost twice as much power, allowing the aircraft to take on light-attack roles as well as training duties. T-28s were later used in combat in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. After a pilot defected in 1963, the North Vietnamese Air Force also flew these airplanes.
One of the most striking features of High Maintenance is its bold yellow, red, and silver paint scheme. This design has a purpose beyond just looking good. This style comes from mid-century U.S. military training aircraft, which used bright colors to improve safety. Yellow wings and control surfaces made airplanes easier to spot in busy training airspace, especially for instructors watching student pilots. Red accents added visibility and helped with identification, while the silver finish reflected both how the planes were made and the era's look.
Together, the scheme reflects the aircraft’s roots as a primary trainer, built not for combat concealment but for instruction, visibility, and proficiency.
Meet “High Maintenance” at the Mile High Wing
Now part of the Mile High Wing, High Maintenance is quickly becoming a highlight of the Unit’s programs.
The Wing’s first ground school sessions have helped members learn about the aircraft’s systems and how it operates. This is the first step to getting the plane fully ready. In the future, the Wing plans to offer rides so the public can experience what it’s like to fly a Cold War-era military trainer. The Mile High Wing, based in Broomfield, Colorado, is recognized for its focus on community involvement. Like other CAF Units, it relies on volunteers who are dedicated to preserving and sharing military aviation history.
We invite you to visit the Mile High Wing and see High Maintenance up close. Come learn about its history, join our upcoming ride programs, or help us preserve and celebrate military aviation heritage. You can learn more at www.MileHighWing.org or by following the group at @CAFMileHighWing.
