Paint and Sip Fundraiser to Help Restore Historic Navy Biplane

RENO, Nev.(May 25, 2026) — The Commemorative Air Force High Sierra Squadron is inviting the community to experience aviation history in a completely different way—with paintbrushes, wine glasses, and a legendary World War II aircraft as inspiration.

On Friday, June 5, the squadron will host a “Paint and Sip” fundraiser inside its historic hangar at Reno Stead Airport to help raise funds for the restoration of its iconic 1941 N3N-3 Navy trainer, better known as the “Yellow Peril.”

The event combines art, history, and hands-on aviation experiences in a setting unlike any traditional fundraiser. Guests will create their own painting of the historic biplane while surrounded by real warbirds and the atmosphere of an active aviation museum.

“This is such a unique way for people to connect with aviation history,” said Blair Latos, development officer for the High Sierra Squadron, who will guide participants step-by-step through the painting experience. “You don’t have to be an artist to enjoy it. The goal is to have fun, learn about the aircraft, and help return this airplane to the sky.”

Built in 1941, the bright yellow N3N-3 served as a primary Navy trainer during World War II at Naval Air Station Glenview, Illinois. The aircraft earned the nickname “Yellow Peril” because of its reputation for exposing inattentive pilots during training.

Today, the aircraft is grounded and needs a new engine, making the fundraiser an important step toward returning the historic trainer to flying condition.

In addition to the Paint and Sip experience, the squadron will also offer rides in its L-19E Bird Dog during the event, giving visitors the opportunity to experience vintage military aviation firsthand.

Tickets are $100 for the Paint and Sip experience or $200 for the event plus a lap in the pattern aboard the Bird Dog.

The fundraiser takes place Friday, June 5, 2026, from 5–7 p.m. at the CAF High Sierra Squadron hangar, located at 5315 Alpha Avenue in Reno. While many people know the CAF for its flying warbirds, local Units across the country often rely on creative grassroots events like this to help fund aircraft restoration and educational outreach efforts. From airshows and ride experiences to community events and workshops, these activities help keep living history accessible to future generations.

Every ticket sold directly supports restoration work on the N3N-3 and helps preserve one more piece of America’s aviation heritage. For tickets and additional information, visit Paint-N-Sip Event website.
