UC-78 Bobcat Returns to CAF Jayhawk Wing

Wichita, KS (January 30, 2025) - After months of dedication and hard work, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Jayhawk Wing’s UC-78 Bobcat has returned home. The aircraft, which sustained damage during a microburst at McConnell Air Force Base last August, was successfully repaired and returned to the Jayhawk Wing hangar on January 22.

Ben Sorenson, the wing’s operations officer, mechanic, and pilot, expressed his excitement about the aircraft’s recovery. “Since finding replacement parts, recovering what we could, and reassembling, the Bobcat is ready to go home,” he said.

The restoration effort was no small task, requiring volunteers' expertise and dedication to bring the historic aircraft back to life. The Jayhawk Wing extends special thanks to Safety Officer Louise Keeling, Executive Officer Doug Snead, and Finance Officer Ken Newell for their valuable contributions.

Ken Newell also expressed gratitude for the support the Wing has received. “We want to thank everyone who donated and shared words of encouragement. It means a lot to us, and we’re looking forward to what’s ahead.”

Now that the UC-78 Bobcat is back in its home hangar, the team is shifting focus to preparing it for the upcoming flying season. Routine winter maintenance is underway to ensure the aircraft is in top condition for future flights.
