Tex Hill’s Birthday Event by CAF Unit Tex Hill Wing in San Antonio Attracts Crowd

July 18, 2019, San Antonio - The first ever Tex Hill Birthday Bash and Flying Extravaganza produced by the Tex Hill Wing was a resounding success. David “Tex” Hill is a legendary World War II fighter pilot. Hill grew up in the San Antonio area and is renowned for flying the P-40 Warhawk while he was the squadron leader of the Flying Tigers. Hill is a triple Ace who participated in combat during World War II and the Korean War. Hill retired as a Brigadier General and was a great supporter of the Commemorative Air Force until his passing in 2007.

The Tex Hill Wing, a unit of Commemorative Air Force members based at Stinson Municipal Airport in San Antonio, is named in his honor. This year the group of volunteers decided to pay tribute to Hill by commemorating his birthday on July 13. Darren Bond, the groups leader, remarked “Without a doubt that was the best event we have ever done! The air was full of the sounds, sights, and smells we all love. Gunfire, explosions, food, flamethrowers, military vehicles, hot rods, displays, Merlin engine Mustangs everywhere, Texans, Birddogs, Mentors, Stearmans, just phenomenal!”

The Tex Hill Wing plans to continue this tradition and hold an event around Tex Hill’s birthday each year to honor American military history and tell the Tex Hill story.
