CAF Increases Presence at Reno Air Races

August 15, 2019 – Dallas - The Commemorative Air Force (CAF), in cooperation with the Reno Air Racing Association, has announced plans to increase involvement in the STIHL National Championship Air Races and Air Show, better known simply as the Reno Air Races, September 11 – 15, 2019. “Individual CAF Units and Members have participated at Reno for many years,” said CAF president and CEO Hank Coates. “This year, we will increase the visibility of CAF. The Unlimited category of racers has traditionally been dominated by Warbird aircraft like the P-51 ‘Mustang’ and F8F ‘Bearcat’. Many of the early racers at Reno were the founders of the Warbird movement in the 1960s. It is only fitting that CAF, the world’s leading Warbird organization, increase our support of this national treasure.”

Since 1964, the STIHL National Championship Air Races have been held in Reno. Originally featuring three classes of racers, Unlimited, Formula One and Biplanes, the current races include six categories of competitors, Unlimited, Formula One, Biplane, T-6, Sport and Jet classes. In addition to the races, daily air shows feature some the country’s leading civilian and military performers.

“The CAF’s mission is to Educate, Inspire, and Honor through Flight,” Coates added. “Events like the Reno Air Races are important outreach to the public and provide our members an opportunity to share the stories of the men and women who built, flew and maintained these aircraft.” While CAF aircraft will not participate in the races, CAF aircraft are expected to fly daily showcase flights, highlighting some of the best-known aircraft of World War II. Other CAF assets will be on static display, giving attendees a chance to see these historic aircraft up close.
