CAF Warbird Tube – Old Number 30: The Skytrain That Became a Sky Raft
ONLINE EVENT Some warbirds represent World War II history. Others lived it. The CAF's C-47 "Old Number 30" is one of those rare aircraft with an extraordinary wartime story, including its role in one of the war’s most remarkable aerial rescue operations.
Join us as David Kennerly of CAF Airbase Arizona shares the fascinating history of "Old Number 30", a genuine World War II veteran that served in the Mediterranean Theater, flying missions across North Africa and Italy. From towing gliders and delivering supplies to dropping intelligence operatives and conducting nighttime rescue missions, this hardworking C-47 did a little bit of everything.
Perhaps its most remarkable chapter came during Operation Halyard, a daring mission to rescue Allied airmen stranded behind enemy lines in Yugoslavia. The operation evacuated about 500 airmen, and "Old Number 30" is believed to be the only surviving operational aircraft known to have participated.
We'll explore the aircraft's remarkable service history, how it joined the CAF's collection, and what it takes to preserve an aircraft that participated in the events it helps commemorate. David will also discuss CAF Airbase Arizona's plans to refurbish its aging interior, ensuring future generations can continue experiencing this extraordinary piece of living history.
