Remembering Ray Norton: A Voice That Brought History to Life

Corpus Christi, TX (July 20, 2026) – The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) honors the life and legacy of one of aviation's most recognizable voices. Ray Norton, a 2026 CAF Hall of Fame inductee and the longtime narrator whose voice became synonymous with TORA! TORA! TORA!, has Gone West. For nearly five decades, Norton used his unmistakable voice, deep knowledge of aviation history, and extraordinary storytelling gift to transform airshows into unforgettable educational experiences. Through his narration, audiences didn't simply watch historic aircraft fly—they understood the people, sacrifices, and events behind them.

Originally from Dallas, Norton began his broadcasting career while attending the University of Houston. He worked in radio at KMSC in Clear Lake City before joining KPRC TV and Radio, where he honed the communication skills that would make him one of the most respected announcers in the aviation community.

Norton's passion for aviation began early. His father worked on B-25 Mitchells and P-51 Mustangs during World War II, inspiring a lifelong appreciation for the aircraft and the generation that flew them. In 1977, CAF’s main airshow announcer, Eddie May, invited Norton to announce the show, introducing him to an organization that would become his second family. He officially joined the CAF the following year, launching a remarkable career dedicated to preserving history through the spoken word.

From 1977 to 2008, Norton served as an announcer for CAF Homecoming events in Harlingen and Midland and became the signature voice of the CAF Wings Over Houston Airshow. He also spent 15 years announcing the Rio Grande Valley Airshow, where his enthusiasm, professionalism, and encyclopedic knowledge of aviation earned admiration from performers and audiences alike.

Norton's greatest legacy came through voicing the Pearl Harbor reenactment demo, TORA! TORA! TORA! Following the retirement of longtime narrator Ken Crites, he became Lead Narrator in 2012. Alongside fellow narrator and CAF General Staff member Denise Walker, Norton elevated the renowned living history performance into an immersive educational experience. His commanding narration guided audiences through the events of December 7, 1941, bringing the story of Pearl Harbor to life with authenticity, emotion, and unwavering historical accuracy.

Over the years, Norton narrated hundreds of TORA! TORA! TORA! performances for hundreds of thousands of spectators across the country. His voice became inseparable from the production itself, helping generations of Americans better understand the courage, sacrifice, and resolve of the Greatest Generation.

Recognizing the importance of preserving that tradition, Norton began mentoring and training new narrators in 2022. He generously shared not only his knowledge of the script but also the responsibility to honor the men and women whose stories were being told. Thanks to his guidance, future audiences will continue to experience TORA! TORA! TORA! with the same respect, authenticity, and passion that defined Norton's performances.

The Commemorative Air Force extends its deepest condolences to Norton's family, friends, and the countless performers, volunteers, and aviation enthusiasts who had the privilege of knowing him. Although his voice is now silent, the legacy he leaves behind will endure every time an announcer steps up to the microphone, every time TORA! TORA! TORA! takes to the sky, and every time someone discovers a deeper appreciation for the history, he dedicated his life to preserving.
